Microscope is very pleased to present an artist talk with Tibetan-American artist Tenzin Phuntsog in connection with his solo exhibition at the gallery “Pure Land,” which runs through April 9th, 2022.

The discussion will begin promptly at 7pm ET on Wednesday March 16 and will be live-streamed on this page. A Q&A with the audience will follow via live chat. Admission is free, with no registration required.

Phuntsog’s solo exhibition includes a new series of works by the artist confronting his existence in a state of exile, having had his repeated attempts to enter his ancestral home denied. The title piece, a 15 minutes video work originally shot on 35mm film, builds a loose narrative around a long-distance conversation between a young Tibetan-American man and his Tibetan-born mother.

The exhibition also features videos contained within small, brass and jade containers — inspired by Tibetan Gau prayer boxes — which play scenes from everyday life as shared on the social media app WeChat among the artist’s relatives in Tibet and those in the US, allowing a mediated access to the autonomous region. Other works include two video works in which the artist’s parents perform roles, representing themselves as well as serving as vessels of a diaspora family.

In this talk, Phuntsog will discuss his works currently on view at the gallery in the context of his larger art practice, which encompasses photography, moving image and performance.
