1922
January 13th: As the eldest of three siblings of Kiichiro and Cho Izumi. Born at 570 Tamaseitou, Ren-ku, Osaka (currently Mori/Miya 1-chome [8th block], Chuo-ku, Osaka).


1934
Graduated from Osaka Municipal Tozai Elementary School in March.

In April, he enrolled in the craft planning department of Osaka City Crafts School (currently Osaka City Crafts High School), where he studied under Rinsaku Akamatsu and Masaaki Yamaguchi, with Yoshio Hayakawa in his third year and Ryuichi Yama in his first year.


1938
From this year, he began attending the night classes at the Nakanoshima Western Painting Institute (Osaka) until the following year.


1939
Graduated from Osaka City Crafts School in March.
In April, he joined Daimaru Co., Ltd. Osaka branch. He worked in the advertising department.


1940
In September, he again attended the night class at the Nakanoshima Hiroshi Research Institute, until April 1942.

He was introduced to Tagunitaro and Kenichi Imai by Suda and visits him.


1941
At this time, he didn’t have any real work to do at Daimaru, so he went to Nara to sketch during work hours, and he was influenced by the art magazines he read at his workplace, “CAHIERS D’ART.” In April, he retired from the Daimaru Co., Ltd. Osaka store.


1942
He enlisted in the 4th Heavy Regiment.


1945
September: He lived at 1912 Inaka-cho, the evacuation destination for revenge. He returned to Daimaru Co., Ltd., Osaka store in the advertising department accessories section, and became friends with Nobuo Sawanoi.


1946
He wanted to go to Autumn Art School, so he took a class with Furuichi and his friend Mira Sugai. He visited Ito while he was in high school.


1947
April ● He retired from Daimaru Co., Ltd. Osaka store.


1948
October ● The works “Mountain Peach” and “Dry Road” were exhibited at the 2nd Pan Artist Association Exhibition (12th to 17th, Daimaru, Osaka, sponsored by Mainichi Shimbun) and won the Mainichi Shimbun Prize. He got to know Toshiro Maeda, who was a judge.


1949
April ● At the recommendation of Toshiro Maeda, the work “Cliff” was exhibited at the 26th Shunyokai Exhibition (1st to 16th, Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum).

June ● He participated in the formation of “Kai Variete.” There were 15 members, including Izumi, Shigeru Ueki, Nobuo Sawanoi, Kunita Suda, Kazuichi Tsudaka, Makoto Nakamura, Hiroshi Nojiri, and Yoshio Hayakawa. It held meetings about once a month and tried to explore new forms of Western cinema through free discussion.

October ● He exhibited at the 3rd Pan Artist Association Exhibition (18th to 23rd, Daimaru, Osaka)

In the same year, he learned about Saburo Hasegawa and Kei Mori through a discussion group on contemporary art held by Saburo Hasegawa, Taro Okamoto, and Makoto Nakamura (Asahi Shimbun Auditorium, Osaka) and a study group of the Jiyu Art Association.


1950
April ● He submitted to the 27th Shunyokai Exhibition (10th to 26th, Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum), but was not selected. He went to Tokyo on the first day and visited Oka Shikanosuke’s house, but was unable to meet him. At the venue, he asked Shiro Kayama why he was rejected and like him, he started having doubts about the open competition.

March ● Kai Variete 1st Exhibition (14th to 19th, Daimaru, Osaka).

November ● The works “Two Trees” and “Black House” were exibited at the 4th Pan-Artist Association Exhibition (11th to 19th, Abeno Kintetsu, Osaka). In the same year he participated in the exhibition on the joy of modeling by Variete members (November 27th~ 29th Osaka Daimaru, Wednesday Club) to which take part, in addition to Izumi, Yoshio Hayakawa, Ryuichi Yamashiro, Yasuko Ueda, Yoshiko Koide, and Fumi Danjo.


1951

January ● He participated in the formation of the “Osaka Modern Art Association” (tentative name), along with Kanichi Katsuta, Koichi Nakai, Kei Mori, Yoshio Hayakawa, Masaki Yamaguchi, and Toshiji Yoshida.

February ● Personal exhibition of Shigeru Izumi’s oil paintings (8th to 14th, Osaka/Hankyu). At his first solo exhibition, he exhibited 25 works, ranging from 1947 to recent works. The works titled “Mountains 6” (1947), “Solitary Star” (1948), “Two Trees,” “Winter Tree,” “Tree on a Hot Day,” “Lemon” (1949), “Group of Trees,” “Wheat Autumn,” “A Landscape,” “Thin branches,” “May,” “Watermelon,” “Back rose,” “Cornhorn flowers,” “White roses,” “Cornhorn flowers,” “At the table,” “Oranges,” “Hydrangeas,” “Celery and Fish,” “Still Life on Desk” (1950), “Corner of the Table,” “Bread and Knife,” and “Red Clay” were exhibited.

He went to Osaka to hold a solo exhibition with the introduction of Mori Kei (“Eikyu Photo Drawing Exhibition,” from 23rd to 28th at Umeda Gallery, Osaka). He learned about Ei-Ku, Ei-Ku and Katsu, a new group that was coming together around Kanichi Ta, Kaichi Nakai, Kei Mori, etc.

Participated in the art group show “New Generation” (tentative name).

April ● At Ei-Q’s suggestion, the members of the new art group agreed to separate themselves from all publicly recruiting groups, and decided to name it the “Demokrato Artists Association.”

August ● The works “Landscape” and “Still Life” were exhibited at the 2nd Democratic Art Exhibition (28th to September 2nd, Hankyu, Osaka).


1952
February ● 3rd Democratic Art Exhibition (5th to 9th, Osaka/Hankyu).

March ● The works “Billiard,” “Landscape A,” “Landscape B,” “Sand,” and “Desktop” were exhibited at the 1st Tokyo Democratic Art Exhibition (27th to April 2nd, Matsushima Gallery, Tokyo). He got to know Teijiro Kubo through Ei-Q’s introduction.

Autumn ● He visited Teijiro Kubo’s house in Moka, Tochigi Prefecture with friends from the Democratic Artists Association in Tokyo, including Ei-Q and Tadashi Kato. He became fascinated with prints after seeing his large collection of Western prints.


1953
January ● He exhibited in the three-person exhibition of works by Yoshio Hayakawa, Shigeru Izumi, and Ryuichi Yamashiro (13th to 18th, Hankyu, Osaka).

March ● 2nd Tokyo Democratic Art Exhibition (30th to April 4th, Maruzen Gallery, Tokyo).

May ● He married Akiko Nagao and moved into a new home in front of the gates of Ikoma-cho, Ikoma-gun, Nara Prefecture.

August ● Participated in the Karuizawa Democratic Seminar (1st to 4th, Teijiro Kubo Villa, Karuizawa). He moved to 1912 Fukai Nakacho, Sakai City.

September ● 2nd solo exhibition of Shigeru Izumi’s works (24th to 28th at Umeda Gallery, Osaka). 20 works from 1952 and 1953 will be exhibited, titled “Encounter,” “Conversation,” “Scandal,” “Revelation,” “Frustration,” “Lust,””Kanna,” “Seaside Story,” “Embrace the Sheep,””Tales on the Grass,” “Butterflies,” “Bells and Flowers,” “Iris,” “Kanna A,” “Kanna B,” “Suitopi A,” “Suitopi B,” (all oil paintings) — “Dream Plate,” “Crazy Head,” “Dangerous Person,” (all watercolors).

October ● He began etching at the recommendation of Kubo Ei and Teijiro Kubo. The only knowledge he had about etching was from a letter from Ei-Q, and he replaced the etching press with a second-hand stretcher.

November ● He sent his first etching work to Ei-Q and asked him some questions about the technique. After that, the exchange of letters continued.


1954
Around January: He selected works from around the end of the previous year — such as “Before Dawn,” “Cabaret,” “Black’s Rack Christmas,” “Lamentation,” “Shakehand,” and “Ascension,” etc., and created the “Izumi Shigeru Etching Collection” (first collection). Self-published.

February ● 3rd Tokyo Democratic Art Exhibition (8th to 13th, Maruzen Gallery, Tokyo). Exhibited etching works.

March ● Izumi Shigeru Etching Exhibition (14th to 20th, Kobe, coffee specialty store “K”).

1955
January Exhibited works such as “Waiting” and “Women” at the 6-person copperplate print exhibition (4th to 10th at Takemiya Gallery, Tokyo). In addition to Izumi, Ei-Q, Tomoaki Hamada, Junichiro Sekino, Tadashi Kato, and Shosaku Ueno.

A roundtable discussion on underestimating Fernand Léger published in Art Criticism No. 41 (May 1955) (Shinichi Segi, Yoshiaki Higashino, Kimihide Tokudaiji, Ichiro Hariyu “Internal Poverty” ), he contributed an article supporting Leger entitled “What should we do to see the sun?” in the same magazine. The contributed essay was be published in the 42nd issue of Art Criticism the following month.

Published “Izumi Shigeru, Etching Collection” (3rd 8-piece art collection, limited to 40 copies) at his own expense. The works are “Morning,” “Game Eyes,” “Kyoka,” “Jealous,” “Friends,” “Madame Ocarina,” “Escaped Spade,” Prayer.”

February ● 9-person lithography exhibition (28th to March 4th, Osaka/Hankyu). In addition to Izumi, exhibits include Ai from the Demokrato Artists Association, Yukihisa Isobe, Ryuko Utsumi, Tadashi Kato, Yoshihiro Takai, Yutaka Funai, and Hideo Yoshiwara.

Yamada Soushi, Oguchi Extras, etc. It was featured prominently in the “Asahi Shimbun” dated the 16th with an illustration.

● At Ei-Q insistence, the “Demokrato Artists Association” was dissolved (16th). The reason for the group’s disbandment was that Izumi won the Newcomer Encouragement Award at the 1st Tokyo International Print Biennale Exhibition, and Ei-Q feared that authority would be created in a group that denies authority.

● Atsuo Imaizumi, Teijiro Kubo, Masao Oshita and others aimed to popularize prints.

Formed the “Hanga Tomo no Kai.” He provided works with Ei-Q, Aiyu, Mitsuto Toneyama, and others. 1st Gofu works (Golden Bird) “Drifting” (each lithograph).

1958
January ● “Night Moth” (1957) “Ce Ci Bon,” “Seven-faced Bird” will be included in the three-person print exhibition of Shigeru Izumi, Yasuri Uchima, and Masatsugu Yoshida (20th to 25th at Yoseido Gallery, Tokyo) (each lithograph) etc. were exhibited.

April ● Exhibited “Musician,” “Tall Blower,” “Confrontation,” and “Ballerina” (each lithograph) at the 26th Japan Print Association Exhibition (27th to May 13th, Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum). He became a member.

May ● Exhibited “Spring” and “Ham” (lithographic prints) at the 3rd Contemporary Japanese Art Exhibition (15th to June 2nd, sponsored by Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum: Bi-Nichi Shimbun).

June ● Submitted “Duel” and “Ballerina” (lithography) at the 1st International Color Print Triennial Exhibition in Grenchen (Switzerland).

Around July, the lithograph art book “MUSICIAN” (8 volumes: Yoshio Hayakawa, limited to 50 copies) was published by Osaka Form Gallery. The works included “La Pi en Rose,” “High Teen,” “Mr. Trombone,” “Rose,” “Flute,” “Violinist,” “Reminiscence,” “Abandoned Garden Song,””Clown.”

August ● Izumi Shigeru Gouache Recent Watercolor Exhibition (7th to 12th, Osaka, sponsored by Hakuho Gallery: Osaka Small Collector Club).

He was asked to contribute illustrations to a manga quarterly magazine whose members include Yoji Kuri, Hiroshi Manabe, Shinta Cho, Yosuke Inoue, Atsushi Kawahara, and Tatsuo Ikeda.

Participated in the Creative Beauty Education Seminar (Arima Onsen, Kobe) with Hideo Yoshiwara, Yutaka Funai, Yoshihiro Takai, Masuo Ikeda, Yukihisa Isobe, and others.

19th to October: Rental villa at 938 Old Road, Karuizawa, commonly known as “Mori no Ie.”

He stayed there and worked hard at creating watercolors and gouache to raise funds for his trip to the United States. He lived with Masuo Ikeda and Yukihisa Isobe.

September ● Went to the United States at the invitation of the Japan Society. He reunited with his beloved singer who had gone to the United States in May of the previous year, and lived in an apartment in New York (139W. 80 st. New York 24. N.Y., etc.). He eventually befriended Yasuko Uchima, Yayoi Kusama, Arthur Florey, and the returning Thomas George.

1960

Autumn ● Produced lithographs for the International Print Art Association (L.G. A.S. Headquarters: New York) at the recommendation of Ben Shahn. His friendship with Ben Shahn began when he purchased Izumi’s work at Yamada Gallery in Kyoto, where he stopped during a trip to the Far East in 1959, and when he returned to New York, he contacted Izumi Kuno.


1961
May ● Solo exhibition “ASPECTS OF THE PEACOCK” (May 15th ~ June 15th, Princeton, Pennsylvania, Lina Gallery).

In October, “FRAGMENT” (lithography) was included in the print collection “Eleven Prints by Eleven Printmakers” (published by Pratt Graphic Arts Center, New York).
