Microscope is very pleased to present a night of live sound by New York-based artists Marcia Bassett, Warren Ng, and Jeremy D. Slater. Each artist will perform a solo sound and video set in which the visual component is either generated live or is being screened for the first time.

Marcia Bassett will perform an improvised set with her Buchla “music box” paired with live video synthesis. Marking the December 2023 release of a new full-length recording titled “Ascending Planes” on the Los Angeles-based label Zum Audio, Warren Ng’s performance features his “characteristic free-form guitar explorations in minimalism” accompanied by largely unseen video fragments involving super 8mm film, painting and collage.

Jeremy D. Slater will begin the evening with “(  ) Instrument,” an improvised performance with live music and reactive video, in which guitar chords and notes trigger pre-assigned video clips, putting to test the possibilities of “video as an instrument.”

The performances will also be live-streamed on our site.

Online tickets will be available at 7:00pm ET on the day of the event on this page.

Marcia Bassett is a NYC-based musician, performer, and artist known for her innovative and unconventional approach to music. Her work explores areas of sound collage, improvisation, and immersive audio-visual environments. Whether working with traditional instruments or electronic media, Bassett constantly pushes the boundaries of sound and image to create a heady sonic interplay of otherworldly narratives that are equal parts trance and critique. She is the founder of Yew Recordings. The latest Yew Recordings release, Covering the Surface (Cassette), documents her live performance and installation at The Film Gallery, Paris, FR in collaboration with Sergej Vutuc and Ursula Scherrer. Recent solo recordings include  Midnight Xpander LP recorded at the EMS (Stockholm); Undulating Arkasboning cassette released on Artsy Records (2022), and a Digi-EP, Altering The Form, on the Belgian KraakRecords label KRUT. She frequently joins others in collaborative installations and multimedia projects. Recent work includes FA/CE sound and live visual collaboration with Ursula Scherrer; “Triangulated Waves,” an electric guitar and violin improvisation with Samara Lubelski for an abstract film showcased at Tabakalara in San Sebastián, Spain; Buchla Music Easel improvisation with Ted Gordon and colorslide stroboscopic light experiments by Jeffery Perkins; sound and video collaboration with Katherine Liberovskaya; Social Entropy, a 4-channel sound installation at Human Resources, LA, and group collaboration with Margarida Garcia, David Maranha and Manuel Mota. She has been integral to several influential bands and pursued solo work under the moniker Zaimph. Her work has left an indelible mark on the experimental music scene and has mapped regions still only dimly understood by subsequent sonic travelers. Artist website at: https://marciabassett.org/

Born in San Francisco and currently living and working in Brooklyn, NY, Warren Ng has operated mostly under the radar for the past two decades as a musician and visual artist orbiting in and among the city’s underground experimental music and film worlds, primarily in the present under the solo moniker Somnambulists. He has performed in NYC venues past and present such as Tonic, Knitting Factory, Death by Audio, Zebulon, Nha Minh, Trans-Pecos, Sunview Luncheonette, and the Fire Over Heaven experimental music series at Outpost Artist Resources, and performed in film & music collaborations at The Robert Beck Memorial Cinema, Mono No Aware, the San Francisco Cinematheque’s Crossroads Film Festival, and previously at Microscope Gallery. He has more than a half dozen full-length releases solo as Somnambulists, and collaboratively as This Invitation. His work is featured in a new full-length recording Ascending Planes on the Los Angeles-based label Zum Audio, which is to be released in December 2023. His work also appears on the recent compilation cd, Zum Audio Vol 5. Another planned release is forthcoming in 2024 on the Toronto-based label Branch Dravidian. His music can be found at https://somnambulistsmusic.bandcamp.com.

Jeremy D. Slater‘s sound work consists of field recordings as a base to create compositions with guitar, objects, ambient noise, environmental sound, and other instruments. Performances include live performed video that is ambient and reactive. Video work also includes single and multiple channel videos for screening and installations with sound and ephemeral sculpture. In addition to his solo project (  ), he is a member of Plan 23, The Principle String Quartet, ROTC (Rubaiyats of the Cicadas), Frogwell, and tū. Jeremy D.
