Microscope is very pleased to present a night of live sound by San Francisco-based artist Bill Hsu, who will join New York sound artists and musicians Michael Foster, Richard Kamerman, and Sean Meehan. A solo set by Crystal Peñalosa will conclude the program.

The evening opens with a 45-minute performance of “electro-acustic audiovisual improvisations” involving saxophone, electronics, and percussion by Foster, Kamerman, Meehan, and Hsu — who will also be outputting live generated video animations. The set is followed by Peñalosa’s performance for electronics and voice, starting at 9PM.

Michael Foster is a saxophonist, multi-instrumentalist, and curator whose work deals with the intersection of improvisation and queer relations. His current projects include The Ghost, The New York Review of Cocksucking, duos with Ben Bennett, and various collaborations with Sarah Hennies, Weasel Walter, Brandon Lopez, Lydia Lunch, and more.

Bill Hsu works with electronics and interactive animations. He is especially inspired by musicians who have developed rich palettes of extended techniques. He has been active in new music in San Francisco for over 20 years.

Richard Kamerman prefers small sounds to large sounds but that doesn’t mean they are always performed as quiet sounds. He also likes accidental sounds and collecting his instruments from people’s trash on the street. He has no time for cigar breaks.

Sean Meehan is a drummer from New York City known for his innovative and expansive use of traditional instruments. For over 30 years he has been active in various sectors of experimental music.He received a 2020 artists award from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts.

Crystal Peñalosa is an electronic musician and interdisciplinary designer based in New York. Her work focuses on self-compassion practices while engaging with authenticity and personal safety. She has released music through Topos Press, painting a future of self-actualization and independence for the CHamoru people, as well as producing self-released music. She has performed collaboratively and presented solo works at The New School, MoMA PS1, Roulette, Issue Project Room, and internationally at the Moers Festival, Spektrum, and the Golden Pudel.
