Microscope is pleased to present a special evening of live sound by Shelley Hirsch & Lori Goldston, as well as by the collaborative duo “Invisible Scissors” by Rachael Guma & Sarah Halpern. The event, which is organized by Sarah Halpern, will begin with a projection of a surprise 16mm film by Jeanne Liotta. Doors open at 7:30pm and the event will start promptly at 8pm.

About the Artists

Classically trained and rigorously de-trained, possessor of a restless, semi-feral spirit, Lori Goldston is a cellist, composer, improvisor, producer, writer and teacher from Seattle. Her voice as a cellist, amplified or acoustic, is full, textured, committed and original. A relentless inquirer, her work drifts freely across borders that separate genre, discipline, time and geography. Current and former collaborators and/or bosses include Earth, Nirvana, Mirah, Jessika Kenney, Ilan Volkov, Eyvind Kang, Stuart Dempster, David Byrne, Terry Riley, Jherek Bischoff, Malcom Goldstein, Steve Von Till, Lonnie Holley, Cat Power, Ellen Fullman, Maya Dunietz, Mik Quantius, Embryo, O Paon, Tara Jane O’Neil, Natacha Atlas, Broken Water, Ed Pias, Christian Rizzo and Sophie Laly, Threnody Ensemble, Cynthia Hopkins, 33 Fainting Spells, Vanessa Renwick, Mark Mitchell, Lynn Shelton, and many more.

Born and raised in East New York Brooklyn, Vocal Artist, Performer, Composer, Storyteller, Writer, Interdisciplinary Artist Shelley Hirsch has been pushing boundaries with her unique vocal art in her compositions, improvisations, readings and performance work, drawing on her life experiences, her memory, her vivid imagination for decades. Invisible Scissors is an experimental duo formed out of NYC’s underground film community. Rachael Guma (theremin, effects) and Sarah Halpern (electric guitar, voice) are long-time collaborators with works culminating in film, performance, zines and music. Invisible Scissors is the newest manifestation of this evolving collaborative work.

Jeanne Liotta works with film, photography, collage, drawing, installation and other mediums with thematics often located at the intersection of art, science, natural philosophy, and ephemerality. Liotta’s works have been presented in exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY; The Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus, Ohio; The Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, Denver, Colorado; The Menil Collection, Houston, Texas; The Contemporary Austin Jones Center, Austin, Texas; Inova Institute of Visual Arts, Milwaukee, Wisconsin; The Camera Club of NY, New York; and the Halle für Kunst und Media, Graz, Austria among others. Her films have appeared in the New York Film Festival, New York, NY; Rotterdam International Film Festival, Rotterdam, The Netherlands; Ann Arbor Film Festival, Ann Arbor, Michigan; Cinémathèque Française, Paris, France; Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin, Germany; CCCB, Barcelona, Spain; The Exploratorium, San Francisco, CA; Machine Project, Los Angeles, CA; and many others. Awards include NYSCA, The Jerome Foundation, The Museum of Contemporary Cinema and The Orphans Film Symposium’s Helen Hill Award. Liotta has been a resident at the Experimental Television Center and a MacDowell Colony Fellow, among others. Jeanne Liotta lives and works in New York.
