Microscope is very pleased to present “Intersections I” the first of two programs dedicated to the never before seen video works by James Fotopoulos in collaboration with fellow artists and friends. The 95 minutes program features works ranging from 35 seconds to 33 minutes made in correspondence with Cory Arcangel, Ben Coonley and Stom Sogo between 2004 and 2009. Each piece was initiated in various spontaneous manners, without plan or purpose, through processes very much subject to chance, often with the artists located in different cities shipping elements of video and sound through the mail. The resulting works push into realms not previously touched upon by the collaborators in their solo endeavors, yet retain characteristics of each.

James Fotopoulos is an artist working primarily with the mediums of moving image, sculpture, and drawing. Among his many notable film and video works, which range from several seconds to over seven hours are Zero (1997), his first feature which debuted when Fotopoulos was just 20, Migrating Forms (1999), Christabel (2001), Jerusalem (2003-2004), The Sky Song (2007), Alice in Wonderland (2010), Dignity (2012), and There (2014). His works have screened and exhibited in the US and abroad including at MoMA P.S.1, Walker Art Center, Whitney Biennial, Museum of Modern Art, Museum of Arts and Design, Andy Warhol Museum, Sundance Film Festival, International Film Festival Rotterdam, London Film Festival, Festival del Film Locarno, Museo de Art Contemportaneo del Zulia, Venezuela, Biennial for Videoart, Mechelen, Belgium, New York Underground Film Festival among others. He is a recipient of a Creative Capital Foundation Grant. James Fotopoulos was born in Chicago, IL in 1976 and currently lives and works in New York.
Cory Arcangel is a Brooklyn-based artist who makes work in a wide range of media, including music, video, modified videogames, performance, and the Internet. He has been the subject of numerous international monographic exhibitions at both galleries and major museums, including The Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, The Whitney Museum in New York, The Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin, The Barbican in London and MoCA in Miami. His work is included in many public collections, including the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, MoMA in New York, The Tate in London, Berlin’s Neue Nationalgalerie, the Smithsonian Museum of American Art in Washington D.C. and the Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst in Zürich. The artist is represented by Team gallery where he had his fourth solo show last fall.
Stom Sogo was born in 1975 and moved to the United States in 1992. Sogo started Open Screenings at Anthology Film Archives in 1995, inspiring a whole crew of filmmakers. His Super8 films and video works have screened at various festivals and exhibitions including the Whitney Biennal, Film Society of Lincoln Center, MoMA, Light Industry, Chicago Filmmakers, Image Forum (Tokyo), Rotterdam Film Festival, and Microscope Gallery, among many others. Sogo graduated with a BA in art and film from Hunter College, New York, in 2000, and died in Tokyo in 2012. Recent retrospectives of his work include at Anthology Film Archives and the New York Film Festival.
