Microscope Gallery is pleased to present Slide Executions, a program of live slide performance works by Andrew Lampert, Kenneth Curwood and Alexia Welch as the fourth of five events happening in conjunction with our current exhibition “Slide Slide Slide”.
Each of the artists, who work regularly with the transparent slide, take a different approach in pieces involving a death in some sense, both the literal and figurative. Lampert’s “Murder Mystery” most closely references the traditional slide show using a storyline – told through an almost complete carousel of slides – of 1950s art world figures, texts, abstractions and Mafioso. Welch’s “Remembering, Three Ways” consists of a carousel of handmade blood-painted slides among other images that over time begin to “sweat” in the heat as the color drains. Curwood’s untitled single slide projection is a stunningly beautiful and complete obliteration of the image as it is bleached before the audience’s eyes.

Kenneth Zoran Curwood is an artist and filmmaker from New York. In his work, Curwood often takes apart old movie cameras and projectors, and re-purposes them to photograph movies one frame at a time (DIY optical printing). He then processes the film in home-made chemical mixtures. Curwood’s works have been shown among others at Microscope Gallery, Anthology Film Archives, Canada Gallery, Union Docs, Louis V E.S.P., and Heliopolis Gallery. Kenneth Curwood graduated with a BA in sculpture from the School of the Visual Arts.
Born in the mid-70s in the Midwest, Andrew Lampert has staged performances and exhibited his films/videos at The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Getty Museum, PS1, The British Film Institute, The Kitchen, The Rotterdam International Film Festival, Kill Your Timid Notion Festival, Light Industry, The Poetry Project, The Brakhage Symposium, Mitchell Algus Gallery, Microscope Gallery among many other venues in US and abroad. He lives in Brooklyn.
Alexia Welch (b. 1991) lives in Hudson, NY where she makes videos, projection-based performances & other digital works. Her most recent endeavors include a video, Motion Reminds Me I Am A Woman (2014), a collaborative publication project entitled Hover Over (2014) and a group dialogue and work experiment called Drip Dry (ongoing). She received her B.A. in Film & Electronic Arts from Bard College in 2013.

A carousel of slides mixing text with images and abstractions with a story involving people in the art world of the 1950s (Cage, Cunningham, Raushenberg, Johns, De Antonio) and a real life Mafioso. Sound alternates between works by Bud Powell and Morton Feldman.
