Microscope continues its YES program of emerging artists with new and recent moving image works by Christy Shigekawa and by Mike Newton.
Shigekawa’s short films and videos begin with images recorded in life which she then manipulates until what is observed and what is imagined become indistinguishable. Newton incorporates video, 35mm photographic slides and prose poetry into his projected works to find beauty and peril at the intersections of potentially incompatible systems, such as using right-wing conspiracy theories to discuss the body. The Bushwick-based artists and long-time friends see their works as overlapping in the themes of “polysemy and uncertainty” reflecting on the “strangeness, the unknowability” manifest in their visual world(s).
