Live Sound: Three Solo Performances and a Trio

Microscope presents as its first live sound night in its new space performances by sound-artist Richard Garet, turntablist Tristan Shepherd, and cellist Leila Bordreuil, both in solos and together as an improvised trio.
For his performance, Garet will focus on creating processes that interact and activate sonic material such as electromagnetic waves, modified tape, cracked media, sonification of light, and computer processing, creating a poly-layered field that articulates colliding-forces carefully treated, weighed, measured. Using turntable and mixer, Tristan Shepherd will explore the possible transformations of his source materials through repetition, timing and minute variation using a combination of dubplates, modified records and custom software. And, Leila Bordreuil will perform a set of amplified and prepared cello using a variety of microphones and carefully positioned amps to create a wide range of spacial textures in which no electronic processes are involved.

Richard Garet interweaves various media including moving image, sound, multimedia performance, and photography. In work ranging from modified environments to site specific installations to audiovisual screening works, Garet constructs intimate spaces and immersive situations that draw attention to the processes of perception and cognition, and which activate sensorial, physical, psychological phenomena that reflect on the nature and experience of time. Tristan Shepherd is a composer, improviser and turntablist from Dearborn, MI currently based in Brooklyn, NY. His work includes installation pieces for multichannel audio, appearances as an improviser in group ensembles and compositions for solo turntable. Using a combination of modified records and custom dubplates as source material, his compositions consist of a sonic counterpoint and bricolage that hinge on the decontextualization and reanimation of the musical gestures ‘frozen’ on the records. Most recently, he curated “Incidental Music”, an exhibition of site specific installations and performances at the Fragmental Museum’s project space: 4 story, 50,000 sq. ft. former zipper factory. Tristan has performed at Roulette Intermedium, Harvestworks, The Emily Harvey Foundation, MoMA PS1, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
Leila Bordreuil is a cellist, composer and sound artist. Her cello playing is often improvised, and mainly focuses on texture variations and a collage of phantom overtones and pitched utterances. Through a unique and original vocabulary of extended techniques, preparations, and imaginative amplification methods, her instrument is used as an abstract resonant body to challenge conventional cello practice. Her composed works draw from a similar texture-based musical aesthetic, but also focus on the relationship between sound and space. In her site-specific electro-acoustic compositions, architecture is the foundation of the piece and musicality arises from an organized spacialization of sound. Leila has performed/exhibited at the Whitney Museum, Roulette, Issue Project Room, and the Performa Biennale among others. She has worked in close collaboration with Tristan Shepherd, Lea Bertucci, Michael Foster, Eli Keszler, and Marina Rosenfeld among others.
